His actions draw him into the world of Richard Roper, a businessman and arms dealer. Part 2 of 6. On the Mediterranean island of Mallorca, Roper's life of luxury and calm is shattered.

Six months earlier, Burr continues her recruitment of Pine. Part 3 of 6. Pine starts to dig up secrets about other members of Roper's household. Meanwhile, Burr and Steadman seize an opportunity to recruit a new asset.

Part 4 of 6. Roper welcomes Pine into his inner circle, leaving Corky out in the cold. Meanwhile, Burr worries about the safety of her source after suspecting a leak.

Part 5 of 6. Roper's suspicions lead him to round up his entourage in an effort to flush out the traitor, forcing Pine into participating in a dangerous game.

In London, Burr and Steadman face mounting opposition. Roper and his team return to Cairo for the deal; and Pine risks it all to put his plan in motion.

Meanwhile, a discredited Burr makes one last stand. Jonathan Pine doesn't shoot bad guys, and the one fistfight he gets into with multiple people, he loses badly.

Instead, Pine is the most charming, intelligent, seductive spy on television. The production and performances really do deserve such adulation, but the miniseries itself feels like a rather by-the-book spy story - which, notably, it is; an acknowledgment that means even more when you consider the author of said book is [Carre].

What remains is the heart of the matter: A cat-and-mouse game in which the "The Pounce" moves in slow motion - and in both directions.

The Night Manager stands tall as a stand-alone gem that elevates the cat-and-mouse game without ever entrapping itself.

Pip pip. All that stuff. In AMC's thoroughly enjoyable miniseries The Night Manager, Laurie, with a healthy tan and clear blue eyes, is perfectly beguiling and chilling as a billionaire arms dealer selling everything from guns to napalm during the Arab spring.

Totally over-the-top and melodramatic - laughably so at times - but hugely enjoyable and entertaining. I really looked forward to it each week, as it makes for perfect Sunday night viewing - a sumptuous bit of fluff to envelope yourself in.

From the first few minutes, Director Susanne Bier and Writers Le Carre and David Farr draw the audience in and keeps us captivated with an enthralling tale.

The Night Manager is almost doggedly devoted to showing its steps, but that just makes the payoff feel earned. It's implausibilities are neatly disguised by screenwriter David Farr and Danish director Susanne Bier She earns vivid work from the whole cast and vastly improves the book's sexual politics.

While the novel was written in , this movie has been modernized. Extraneous characters easy to use in a novel have been combined - and it works well.

I also like some of the changes with the character of Roper's son He is acting more age appropriate here than in the novel.

Hugh Laurie is providing a masterful performance. I'm also blown away by Tom Hiddleston. As much as I am a fan, I didn't think he had it in him to play a truly ruthless character - he does and he does it very well.

Excellent cinamatography, beautiful scenery, good plot, and excellent acting. There is a lot of violence and some sex scenes, so wouldn't reccommend for younger viewers.

John Le Carre is my 2nd favorite author, unluckily behind Thomas Pynchon, who is the greatest. The acting is of the highest level. The cinematography and music is A-class.

There's no silly off-side narratives that distract from the main story. There's no appealing to mainstream TV cliches or histrionics.

It's just good, solid GOOD. I can't wit for the rest. This series is the smartest TV drama since Borgen, and in addition to being total eye candy, with beautiful cast and clothes and international backdrops, it has a riveting plot involving arms traffic, well-written dialogue, and interesting male and female lead characters.

Never a dull moment. This is series television at its pinnacle of perfection. The tension is relentless. The story is so totally credible in this day and age it's frightening beyond imagination.

The characters are fantastically well drawn, and the acting utterly sublime. The Hollywood Reporter. Retrieved 9 December Retrieved 11 April Retrieved 23 April Retrieved 18 March Retrieved 8 February Retrieved 19 March Retrieved 4 February Retrieved 12 December Alliance for Women in Media.

Roper and his entourage arrive late at night. Pine contacts Burr, and provides her with the information he obtained during Roper's stay.

He says he wants nothing further to do with this, while Burr, seeing an opportunity to bring down Roper, wants Pine to help her investigation.

When Jonathan baulks, she cites Pine's tours of duty during the Iraq War and his witnessing what harm chemical weapons can inflict, as well as Sophie's murder.

Jonathan agrees to work with Angela, upon promise of a new identity for him afterwards, and is given non-official covers : Jack Linden and, later, Thomas Quince.

As Linden, Jonathan spends time in Devon, England , establishing a violent cover identity. Later, Angela sends him to Spain , where Roper is meeting partners in relation to an arms deal.

The operation to place Jonathan within Roper's organisation is named Limpet. In Majorca, Spain , an abduction of Roper's son Daniel is staged at a seaside restaurant.

Jonathan, as Quince working as a chef, appears to free Daniel by confronting the attackers, who are in reality undercover agents.

During the confrontation, Quince fractures one of the agent's arms "to make it look real", and one of the other abductors violently beats him in retaliation.

The badly injured Quince is recognised by Roper as "Pine from Switzerland" and while grateful for the rescue, Roper remains sceptical.

Quince is taken by Roper back to his villa to recover. Roper's henchman Corky confronts Jonathan about his criminal past and multiple identities, and Roper says he will soon learn who the wounded man is.

In London, Angela works to keep the status of Operation Limpet secret from the "River House" MI6 , who she believes would disrupt the operation if they learn about it.

Elena is found hanged to death. Angela finds a grieving Apo and attempts to gain his trust. From Daniel, Jonathan learns of Roper's secret study and its hidden key, and that an alarm test is done daily.

Jonathan finds the key and, during the test in the study, photographs documents on Tradepass, Roper's agricultural equipment company which is a front.

The next day, Roper presents Jonathan with a passport under the name Andrew Birch. However, Jonathan must do something for him in exchange.

Roper gives him Corky's former job of control of Tradepass. Jonathan accepts his new name and role.

Reviewing the first episode for The Guardian , Archie Bland began by noting, " The Night Manager is as sexed up as television drama comes.

The palette is as sumptuous as one of our hero Jonathan Pine's beautiful hotels". He added, "It's Laurie's vulpine performance that gives The Night Manager its force once the smell of money has worn off.

But we barely see him for the first 40 minutes — a delayed gratification trick that's always worked like magic on me, ever since we spent the whole first episode of The West Wing waiting impatiently to meet Josiah Bartlet.

When the noble beast beneath that accommodating English exterior begins to make itself known, I do find the righteous revenge he's intent on wreaking on Roper compelling.

IGN reviewer Jesse Schedeen gave the miniseries 8. This miniseries is tightly paced, suspenseful and boasts strong performances from the likes of Hiddleston, Laurie, Colman and Hollander.

The story is so totally credible in this day and age it's frightening beyond imagination. The characters are fantastically well drawn, and the acting utterly sublime.

But it's the taught guitar string of a plot stretched to near breaking point as the antagonist and amoral arms dealer, played by Hugh Laurie, keeps turning the tuning knob ever tighter.

Tom Hiddleston's night manager is exquisitely flawed and yet turns out to have a talent for the spy game. He walks on the proverbial knife's edge in every episode.

They both deserve Emmy Awards. I binge watched the first six episodes and it was the best investment of time watching television I've ever made.

I will preface this by saying I have not read the source material that this show is derived from. I thoroughly enjoyed this show.

It was one of those shows that each episode made me want more.
